Turbulence, oh my!

So I flew today from Seattle to Fort Lauderdale for a continuing professional education conference, and had a layover in Phoenix. The flight from Phoenix to FLL was smooth sailing up until about 45 minutes before we landed. We started getting short bursts of turbulence, 5 seconds or so at first, and it happened a couple times. A moment after the last mini-bout of turbulence, we went through a full 30 seconds of turbulence so rough that a woman in the aisle to go to the bathroom actually fell over, passengers’ drinks spilled everywhere, people were exclaiming loudly, etc.
